The iPhone XR was released on Friday, October 26th about 5 weeks after the big Apple event introducing it.
The iPhone XR has a 6.1-inch LCD display and an aluminum and glass body and a price tag of only $749. The XS Max starts at $1,099 and the XS $999, so the XR is really a great deal.
For many of us, the decision is plain. The iPhone XR does all the same cool things that the iPhone XS does but for a lot less money. The XR is $250 less than the XS, and $350 less than the XS Max.
The Waiting Game
Why did we have to wait for so long for this iPhone? According to the Wall Street Journal, Apple delayed the XR because it is expected to outsell both the other two X models and the XR would cannibalize sales of the more expensive iPhones.
Apple staggered the release to give it’s pricier models an extra 5 weeks without any internal competition. The move forced early adopters to purchase one of the more expensive phones instead of waiting for the XR.
It’s described as a “Dutch auction”, which begins with a higher price and then eventually lowers it until participants accept the price.
The XR benefits are pretty much the same as it’s more expensive siblings. The A12 chip, Face ID to unlock the phone and create Animoji’s. It has the same all- screen design and wireless charging. The only real difference is the camera and the OLED screen.
If you look at both the XR and XS Max together side by side, the Max will give you slightly darker black and brighter whites than the XR. But if you really want your Twitter feed to pop 3% more colors, it may be worth the extra money.
The XR camera doesn’t have the additional telephoto lens that is on both the XS and XS Max. So you if you want to zoom in on something far away, it won’t be as crisp. Also, the Portrait mode will only work on people with its machine learning algo. So you won’t be able to take a portrait of your food, but again if that is important then shell out the extra $250.
No 3-D Touch
You can still long-press on items on the Control Panel to bring up more options and many apps have all figured out workarounds. Most people will barely notice the difference.
The OLED screen takes a lot of juice to power and the XR will have a better battery life. At the end of the day, the best screen in the world doesn’t mean anything if your phone is dead.
